East Softball WINS Regional - Off To State

The Lakota East girl's softball team defeated district rival Lakota West on Saturday earning them their first berth in the State Final Four in the school's 13-year history. The Hawks downed the Firebirds at the University of Dayton by a final score of 4-1. The Lady Hawks become the fourth Lakota East team sport to qualify for the OHSAA State Championships (1999 boys soccer, 2006, 2007 boys volleyball).

One day after ousting Lebanon in a 1-0 regional semifinal, the Thunderhawks reeled off eight hits and kept the Firebirds (22-8) at bay. Sara Pearson started the party by cranking the ball to the center field wall and driving home Alyssa Grevenkamp in the third inning.

Pearson finished the day 2-for-4 with a double and the RBI, and Grevenkamp went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI. Kim Rollins went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

The defense was a big part of securing a Regional title for the Thunderhawks. The Firebirds didn't record a hit until the fourth inning, and Pearson - the winning pitcher - struck out nine batters. East's record goes to 26-5 overall.

The Hawks advance to face Grove City, the No. 1 team in the last Division I state poll, in a state semifinal at Akron's Firestone Stadium, Thursday at 5:30 p.m. A state send-off is planned for the team on Wednesday afternoon at the school.

Congratulations and good luck at STATE! GO LADY HAWKS!

She recently completed her Masters Degree and currently resides in Mason, Ohio.
East Softball Captures 5th District Title

The Lakota East Softball team was literally hitting on all cylinders at Monday's Southwest District Championship game at Mason. The Lady Hawks combined strong pitching, hitting and defense to shutout #2 seeded Glen Este, 11-0. The blanking was a repeat of the 2008 title game when the Hawks also defeated the Trojans 2-0. It marks the fifth time in the past six years the Lady Hawks have won a District Championship.

"Everyone at East is so proud of these young ladies and what they have accomplished this season," said East AD Rich Bryant. "It was a total team effort - offensively every single player contributed."

The Thunderhawks erupted for 6 runs in the third inning highlighted by sophomore Kim Rollins (4-4, 3 rbi) bases loaded single that plated two teammates. Offensively that would be all the scoring East needed as starting pitcher Sara Pearson dominated the Trojans allowing only three hits while striking out seven. Freshman Lea Buckenmyer added three RBIs from the No. 9 spot in the batting order.

The Thunderhawks overall record goes to 24-5 with the win. They will advance to the regional semifinals for the third straight year and face the Lebanon Warriors at 5 p.m. on Thursday at the University of Dayton. The Hawks are one of 16 Division 1 OHSAA teams still competing for a State Championship.

Zach becomes only the second Thunderhawk ever to qualify for the state tennis championships. Mueck will take his impressive 28-2 record into his district semifinal match with Mason freshman Miguel Cepeda on Saturday, May 22, at Mason. The district semifinals and finals are to determine state seeding.Using last year's district loss as motivation, Zach has raised his level of play to the point where he is considered a serious contender for state singles title.

Unfortunately the day didn't goes as well for returning state qualifier Freddy Abunku . The junior played some of his best tennis of the season in upsetting the #1 seed Gupta from Troy in straight sets, but lost in his second match of the day when had to retire due to leg cramping.

Congratulations to both players and good luck Zach at STATE!

Class of 2013 takes home the 'Campus Cup'' in 2009-2010

The Freshman Campus all-sports trophy, better known as the “Campus Cup”, was captured by the Lakota East Freshman Class of 2013 this year, thanks to an 8-5 defeat over Lakota West.

The Campus Cup, which began last year after the split of Lakota East & West Freshman Campuses, awards the school who earns the most victories over their rival in all Freshman Athletic Contests. These contests include Freshman football, girls volleyball, boys & girls soccer, boys & girls basketball, wrestling, baseball and softball. Lakota East Freshman defeated West this year in football, girls soccer, boys basketball (twice), wrestling, baseball, and softball (twice). Thanks to both baseball & softball who brought home the clinching victories against West on April 21st , the Class of 2013 has reason to celebrate!!

The Cup will be displayed at the main office of the Freshman Campus for the entire 2010-2011 school year. Last year West Freshman defeated East, 7-6.

East Baseball Wins Another GMC Crown

It didn't come easy, but the Lakota East baseball team would not be denied, winning the programs second GMC title with a thrilling come-from-behind win against Mason on Monday afternoon at Thunderhawk Field. The Hawks won a 12-11 extra inning affair on Mitch Geers' bases-loaded, full-count single to left field bringing in Andrew Wills and capping off a three-run rally.

"Winning a GMC Championship is not done by accident," said East head coach Ray Hamilton. "It takes a very high level of play and this is what this team has done all year."

It looked like the Thunderhawks were going to run away with the game early on as the Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, but Mason rallied in the fifth inning to tie the score. East built another big lead with 4 runs in their half of the fifth, but Mason once again fought back to tie it up in the sixth.

The game went to extra innings when neither team scored in the seventh. Mason took its first lead of the game with two runs in the top of the 8 th . Trailing 11-9 heading into the bottom of the inning the Thunderhawks got a run-scoring single from Wills, then an infield single from Quinn Kist-Kline with the bases loaded to tie it up. Geers, who was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, finished things off for the Hawks with his game-winning hit. Kist-Kline, who relieved starter Evan Hills, pitched the final 3 innings and got the win from the mound.

The conference championship is the second GMC title for the Thunderhawks and their first outright crown since sharing one with Hamilton in 2005. The Hawks have a lofty No. 2 ranking in the latest state baseball polls.

"Without a doubt this is one of the closest knit groups I have ever had the pleasure to coach," said Hamilton. "Their work ethic and commitment to team has been outstanding. They have had one of those seasons where they have done everything to make the entire East community proud."

East's overall record goes to a program best of 18-5 with a 14-3 mark in the league. The Hawks will visit Mason on Wednesday to close out the regular season. Lakota East earned the #2 seed in the upcoming sectional tournament and will host the winner of the Western Hills-Edgewood game on Thursday, May 13th , game time at 5:00 PM.

Volleyball Team Finds Winning Rhythm

The Lakota East boy's volleyball team is continuing the programs tradition of being one of the top teams in the GMC this season. With a senior laden team the Thunderhawks (11-3 overall and 4-1 in the league) are currently 2nd in the GMC standings just behind leader Lakota West (9-0 and 6-0). The final outcome of the league title could possibly be decided this Tuesday when the Hawks host the Firebirds in a crosstown clash.

"We have been trying to find our rhythm throughout the season and I feel like we finally have," said East head coach Faber Fields. "We can play with any team in the region or state, and we are a very exciting team to watch."

East has won its last four matches with a most recent win against always tough Oak Hills. "We bring a relentless defense with a powerful and fast offense which has made us pretty successful so far," said Fields. Earlier this season the Thunderhawks finished 5th (gold division), playing very well, at the Cardinal Classic that featured some of the top teams in the state.

Tuesday's battle against defending GMC champs Lakota West begins with the JV match at 5:45 and varsity at 7:00 PM.

COME OUT AND SUPPORT THE HAWKS!

East Softball Team Wins at Weekend Tourney

The Lakota East Softball team had a very successful weekend playing at the Valley of Thunder tournament in Southeastern Ohio. The Lady Hawks handily won all four games they played, against opponents with combined records of 50-8 coming into the event. East defeated Wellston (4-2), Symmes Valley (8-1), Adena (4-1) and Ashland KY, (7-0) by a whopping 23-4 run margin.

"We (coaching staff) feel this was a total team effort," said East head coach Steve Castner. "Even though they did not get the big hit, several players contributed in every game whether it was a great catch in the outfield or laying down a bunt. The weekend was a success."

Defensively the Hawks played extremely well giving up only 8 hits and 4 runs in 28 innings. From the mound, Erin Pollock and Sara Pearson combined for 55 strikeouts over the four games played. Alyssa Grevenkamp, Sara Pearson, Kim Rollins, Kelly Hunt and Chelsie Harrison each had multiple hit games.

Almost halfway through the 2010 season, the Hawks are at the top of every offensive category in the GMC. East's overall record stands at 11-2, with a 6-2 mark in the GMC. The girl's are currently third in the league standings with a big week of conference games ahead. Coming up East has away matchups against Oak Hills (4/19), Princeton (4/22) and Colerain (4/23) and will be looking to avenge an earlier season 2-0 loss to Lakota West when they host the Firebirds on Wednesday, April 21 st .
The softball team is off to a strong start to their season. Currently they are 11-2 overall and 6-2 in the GMC.

"We are excited about the season because we are playing really well all around." says Senior Erin Pollock. "We are just coming off a 4 - 0 weekend in the Symmes Valley Tournament which we especially good coming off a loss to Fairfield on Wednesday." In a win over Chillicothe, Erin had 9 Strikeouts in the game to bring her season total to 46. One of the keys to the strong starts is their leaders. "We have a strong core of leaders on our team from Andi Martin who's played on Varsity since she was a sophomore to Chelsea Harrison who is one of our offensive leaders." said Erin.
East's Davenport and Burton Claim Freshman All-American Status

On March 24-26, 6 Lakota East wrestlers traveled to Virginia Beach, Virginia to compete in the NHSCA Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Nationals. Many of the top high school wrestlers in the country travel to this prestigious event every year in hopes of coming home with an All-American status. 2 of these East wrestlers came home as All-Americans, which means that they placed in the top 8 in their respective weight class. Douglas Davenport became a Freshman All-American by placing 5th in the 160 lb. weight class. In the first round, Douglas pinned Randy Wilson of New York in 1:58. In the 2nd round, he dropped a 12-4 decision to Dorian Spradlin of Maryland. Spradlin ended up placing 2nd. Davenport then bounced back strong by defeating Alex Pullen of Maryland 4-1 and Tyler Cox of Delaware 3-2. He then dropped a tough 10-2 decision to Wyatt Running of Ohio and finally defeated Vince Ambrose of Illinois by a score of 9-5 for the 5th place finish. Jacob Burton captured Freshman All-American status by placing 6th at 171 lbs. Burton pinned Erik DeJonge of New Jersey in the first round and then dropped a tough 7-3 decision to Scott Boykin of Tennessee in the 2nd round. Boykin ended up placing 4th. Jacob bounced back strong by defeating Trevor Bruffy of Virginia 8-0 and then Kacee Hutchinson of North Carolina by a score of 6-2. He then lost a hard fought 4-2 decision to Shane Cockerille of Maryland. Cockerille ended up placing 3rd. Finally, in his 5th place championship match, Jacob lost a real intense battle with David Williams of New Jersey by a score of 5-3. This gave Burton a 6th place finish. Other East wrestlers who competed at this event were Eric Sullivan (Sophomore Division), Nathan McGuire (Freshman Division), Tim Bowman (Sophomore Division), and Ryan Miller (Junior Division).

East Tennis Continues their Winning Ways!

The Lakota East boy's tennis team is picking up where they left off last year-dominating their opponents and winning matches! Last year's team got off to the fastest start in the history of the program, then went on to set new won-loss records and claim their first GMC tennis title. Five matches into the 2010 season nothing looks much different. The Hawks are undefeated with five straight 5-0 wins.

"We've had a good start to the season, winning 240/260 games over our first four matches," said East head coach Greg Mahlerwein. "It's been a total team effort, with strong performances throughout the entire lineup."

Lakota East returned everyone from last seasons record setting squad. "Zach (Mueck) and Freddy (Abunku) are moving well in singles play, while Akash (Umakantha) and Matt (Witzman) are working the short angle shots very well in doubles," said Mahlerwein. "But we are not yet at the high level of play that we reached by the end of last year."

The Thunderhawks have some important matchups looming with none bigger than cross town rival Lakota West on Thursday, April 15 th . "Considering the competition coming up (West, Sycamore, St. Xavier), we need to keep improving each match, especially if we are to defend our GMC title," commented Malherwein.

Thursday's matchup at Lakota West begins at 4:00 pm. The Hawks will be on the road to face Loveland and Fairfield then back home against Sycamore on Tuesday, April 20th .

Lady Hawks Season Ends as District Runner-Up

The East girl's basketball team established one more program milestone with their appearance in the Southwest Ohio District Finals at Harrison on Saturday, March 6th. East faced the 16-6 Xenia Bucs who defeated Beavercreek to get to the finals. Unfortunately the Lady Hawks magical season came to a stinging end with a 67-64 loss.

Xenia got off to a quick 10-2 advantage as the Bucs went on a 8-0 run. The Hawks then went on their own 6-0 run. The first quarter ended with Xenia ahead 18-13.

An East technical techical foul midway through the 2nd quarter allowed Xenia to regain momentum and reestablish a 6 point advantage. Alyssa Grevenkamp led East in the 2nd quarter with three tray's. Molly Blomer's layup with 7 seconds remaining in the 1st half gave the Hawks their first lead at 37-36 going into the locker room.

The third quarter ended even at 52-52. The lead exchanged hands several times in the fourth quartert with neither team able to grap a solid lead. Both teams were knotted up 60-60 with three left. East had their opportunities in the final minute of play, but Xenia converted layups and free throws to win by three.

Whitney Wyckoff led East with 19 points. Molly Blomer and Alyssa Grevenkamp had 16 and 13 points respectively. Aleth Pashi dished 6 assists.

The East girl's had an unforgettable season finishing with the best overall record in the program's 13 year history at 13-11. Additonally their sectional championship and district runnerup achievements are Thunderhawk basketball firsts. With the loss of only 4 seniors and return of an incredibly talented underclass the future of the East girls basketball program is extremely bright with more memories to come.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE COACHES AND PLAYERS ON A SEASON TO REMEMBER!

EAST UPSETS COLERAIN! Magical Season Continues for the Lady Hawks

The Lakota East girl’s basketball team defeated the No. 3 seed Colerain Cardinals, 68-60 on Friday night winning the school’s first sectional basketball title. The young Thunderhawks will continue their storied season advancing along with 5 other GMC girl’s teams to next weekends District finals.

"This is a special group of young ladies who do not want their season to be over," said first year head coach Nikki Drew. Drew faced her former team for the second time this season avenging an earlier 59-51 loss.

East led Colerain at the half by a slim 31-29 margin then saw the Cardinals (17-5) tie it up early in the third quarter. The Thunderhawks (13-10) outscored Colerain 21-4 the rest of the frame, highlighted by a 12-0 run. Alyssa Grevenkamp’s layup gave the Hawks their largest lead of the game at 56-35 with 6:55 to play.

Colerain did not have an answer for East’s super sophomores Molly Blomer and Whitney Wyckoff. Blomer led all scorers with a season high
25 points shooting an amazing 12-15 from the field. Wyckoff added 21 points, three steals, and career-high 12 rebounds and 6 assists.

"They are outworking their opponents and playing as good together as a team can at the right time," said Drew. "They are playing very inspired and it has been a pleasure to coach them."

East will face the Xenia Buccaneers (16-6) next Saturday at Harrison High School for a chance to advance to Regional’s. The Xenia-East contest will be the first of 5 District final games played that day.
Tipoff is slated for 11:00 am. Pre-sale tickets will be available in the athletic office this week.

Men's Bolwing Team QUALIFIES for DISTRICT

On Friday the Lakota East boys bowling team rolled a 4025 to earn one of the five qualifying spots to move on to district tournament for the first time in their 6 year history. They were lead by junior Mitch Geers who rolled a school record 713 series (3 games). Brandon Paisley rolled a 599 to help the Thunderhawks. Despite their efforts East found themselves in 7 th place heading into the baker games and 80 pins below the cut line.

Over the last part of the season East has really stepped up their baker games and they knew they were in striking distance. They also knew that they had beaten many of the teams that were ahead of them including Lakota West in match play during the season. After a bumpy first game they steadily improved and posted strong baker games the rest of the way. After the 5 th baker game with just 1 more game to roll they found themselves 1 pin behind Lakota West for the final spot in the district tournament.

Memories of last year came back when East and West tied for the final spot and East lost in a 2 frame roll off. There would be no tie as East made up for an early open with a 4 bagger and rolled a 205. They posted their score and then waited for the remaining teams to finish. Despite a strong run by Moeller their score held up and next Saturday they will compete at Eastern Lanes in Middletown for one of the five spots in the state tournament.

CONGRATULATIONS BOYS AND GOOD LUCK NEXT WEEK!

East vs West : A Battle to Save Lives!

The 2010 Lakota East vs Lakota West boys and girls' basketball games will be a slam dunk in the fight against heart disease as teams raise funds for the American Heart Association. The girls game will be held on Saturday, February 6 at 2:00 p.m. and the boys game is Friday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m.
“Both schools see this as a unique opportunity to use their rivalry game as a platform to create awareness and raise funds for the American Heart Association,” said Richard Bryant, Athletic Director of Lakota East. “Each school has created a unique t-shirt (black for East and red for West) to create a ‘black out' vs ‘red out' for the game, showing school pride in fighting our nation's number one killers – heart disease and stroke.”
The month of February is officially Heart Month across the country. During this time, the American Heart Association encourages people to take part in the fight against heart disease by going to the doctor to learn their numbers and making positive lifestyle changes such as exercising, eating less fat and quitting smoking. Events such as the Lakota East vs West basketball games are an exceptional way to spread the message of the American Heart Association and to get youth started on heart health for a lifetime.
Each Lakota basketball t-shirt bears the slogan, “Beating Heart Disease Together” and are on sale for $10, with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Heart Association. To order t-shirts visit, www.officiallogoshop.com/AHA . For information about the American Heart Association, visit www.americanheart.org .

Amber Kidd Surpases 1000 Point Plateau

Lakota East girl's basketball player, senior Amber Kidd, is the type of quiet, unassuming player that could easily go unrecognized. What shouldn't go unnoticed though is that she recently broke through the 1,000-point mark in her high school career.
Kidd transferred to East last year after playing at Westbrook Christian School in Rainbow City, Alabama for three seasons. Eligibility requirements in her former state permitted the talented Kidd to play varsity when she was in the 8th grade. During her first year on varsity she scored 277 points. In subsequent seasons she totaled 289 points as a freshman and 283 points as a sophomore. Her junior and senior years at East have produced another 191 points bringing her to an all-time mark of 1040 points to date.
“Amber is one of the most self-motivated, determined kids that I have had the privilege to coach,” said East 1st year head coach Nikki Drew. “She has an amazing pull up jumper, plays defense like a champion, and is one of best rebounders I have seen from the 2 guard position. “
Kidd along with two other seniors, Page Mayberry and Megan Boice, will be honored in pregame ceremonies when the Hawks face the Lakota West Firebirds on Saturday, February 6th . Tipoff is slated for 2:00 pm.

East is currently 8-8 overall and 4-6 in the always tough GMC with four regular season games remaining in the 2009-10 campaign.

Hydration is Important All Year Long

We're always reminded of how important it is for athletes to stay hydrated during the hot summer months. But hydration is important no matter what the season.
