Lady Hawks Season Ends as District Runner-Up

                The East girl's basketball team established one more program milestone with their appearance in the Southwest Ohio District Finals at Harrison on Saturday, March 6th. East faced the 16-6 Xenia Bucs who defeated Beavercreek to get to the finals. Unfortunately the Lady Hawks magical season came to a stinging end with a 67-64 loss.

Xenia got off to a quick 10-2 advantage as the Bucs went on a 8-0 run. The Hawks then went on their own 6-0 run. The first quarter ended with Xenia ahead 18-13.

An East technical techical foul midway through the 2nd quarter allowed Xenia to regain momentum and reestablish a 6 point advantage. Alyssa Grevenkamp led East in the 2nd quarter with three tray's. Molly Blomer's layup with 7 seconds remaining in the 1st half gave the Hawks their first lead at 37-36 going into the locker room.

The third quarter ended even at 52-52. The lead exchanged hands several times in the fourth quartert with neither team able to grap a solid lead. Both teams were knotted up 60-60 with three left. East had their opportunities in the final minute of play, but Xenia converted layups and free throws to win by three.

Whitney Wyckoff led East with 19 points. Molly Blomer and Alyssa Grevenkamp had 16 and 13 points respectively. Aleth Pashi dished 6 assists.

The East girl's had an unforgettable season finishing with the best overall record in the program's 13 year history at 13-11. Additonally their sectional championship and district runnerup achievements are Thunderhawk basketball firsts. With the loss of only 4 seniors and return of an incredibly talented underclass the future of the East girls basketball program is extremely bright with more memories to come.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE COACHES AND PLAYERS ON A SEASON TO REMEMBER!

EAST UPSETS COLERAIN! Magical Season Continues for the Lady Hawks

The Lakota East girl’s basketball team defeated the No. 3 seed Colerain Cardinals, 68-60 on Friday night winning the school’s first sectional basketball title. The young Thunderhawks will continue their storied season advancing along with 5 other GMC girl’s teams to next weekends District finals.<br />
<br />
"This is a special group of young ladies who do not want their season to be over," said first year head coach Nikki Drew. Drew faced her former team for the second time this season avenging an earlier 59-51 loss.<br />
<br />
East led Colerain at the half by a slim 31-29 margin then saw the Cardinals (17-5) tie it up early in the third quarter. The Thunderhawks (13-10) outscored Colerain 21-4 the rest of the frame, highlighted by a 12-0 run. Alyssa Grevenkamp’s layup gave the Hawks their largest lead of the game at 56-35 with 6:55 to play.<br />
<br />
Colerain did not have an answer for East’s super sophomores Molly Blomer and Whitney Wyckoff. Blomer led all scorers with a season high
25 points shooting an amazing 12-15 from the field. Wyckoff added 21 points, three steals, and career-high 12 rebounds and 6 assists.<br />
<br />
"They are outworking their opponents and playing as good together as a team can at the right time," said Drew. "They are playing very inspired and it has been a pleasure to coach them."<br />
<br />
East will face the Xenia Buccaneers (16-6) next Saturday at Harrison High School for a chance to advance to Regional’s. The Xenia-East contest will be the first of 5 District final games played that day.
Tipoff is slated for 11:00 am. Pre-sale tickets will be available in the athletic office this week.

Men's Bolwing Team QUALIFIES for DISTRICT

On Friday the Lakota East boys bowling team rolled a 4025 to earn one of the five qualifying spots to move on to district tournament for the first time in their 6 year history. They were lead by junior Mitch Geers who rolled a school record 713 series (3 games). Brandon Paisley rolled a 599 to help the Thunderhawks. Despite their efforts East found themselves in 7 th place heading into the baker games and 80 pins below the cut line.

Over the last part of the season East has really stepped up their baker games and they knew they were in striking distance. They also knew that they had beaten many of the teams that were ahead of them including Lakota West in match play during the season. After a bumpy first game they steadily improved and posted strong baker games the rest of the way. After the 5 th baker game with just 1 more game to roll they found themselves 1 pin behind Lakota West for the final spot in the district tournament.

Memories of last year came back when East and West tied for the final spot and East lost in a 2 frame roll off. There would be no tie as East made up for an early open with a 4 bagger and rolled a 205. They posted their score and then waited for the remaining teams to finish. Despite a strong run by Moeller their score held up and next Saturday they will compete at Eastern Lanes in Middletown for one of the five spots in the state tournament.

CONGRATULATIONS BOYS AND GOOD LUCK NEXT WEEK!

East vs West : A Battle to Save Lives!

The 2010 Lakota East vs Lakota West boys and girls' basketball games will be a slam dunk in the fight against heart disease as teams raise funds for the American Heart Association. The girls game will be held on Saturday, February 6 at 2:00 p.m. and the boys game is Friday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m.
“Both schools see this as a unique opportunity to use their rivalry game as a platform to create awareness and raise funds for the American Heart Association,” said Richard Bryant, Athletic Director of Lakota East. “Each school has created a unique t-shirt (black for East and red for West) to create a ‘black out' vs ‘red out' for the game, showing school pride in fighting our nation's number one killers – heart disease and stroke.”
The month of February is officially Heart Month across the country. During this time, the American Heart Association encourages people to take part in the fight against heart disease by going to the doctor to learn their numbers and making positive lifestyle changes such as exercising, eating less fat and quitting smoking. Events such as the Lakota East vs West basketball games are an exceptional way to spread the message of the American Heart Association and to get youth started on heart health for a lifetime.
Each Lakota basketball t-shirt bears the slogan, “Beating Heart Disease Together” and are on sale for $10, with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Heart Association.
Amber Kidd Surpases 1000 Point Plateau

Lakota East girl's basketball player, senior Amber Kidd, is the type of quiet, unassuming player that could easily go unrecognized. What shouldn't go unnoticed though is that she recently broke through the 1,000-point mark in her high school career.
Kidd transferred to East last year after playing at Westbrook Christian School in Rainbow City, Alabama for three seasons. Eligibility requirements in her former state permitted the talented Kidd to play varsity when she was in the 8th grade. During her first year on varsity she scored 277 points. In subsequent seasons she totaled 289 points as a freshman and 283 points as a sophomore. Her junior and senior years at East have produced another 191 points bringing her to an all-time mark of 1040 points to date.
“Amber is one of the most self-motivated, determined kids that I have had the privilege to coach,” said East 1st year head coach Nikki Drew. “She has an amazing pull up jumper, plays defense like a champion, and is one of best rebounders I have seen from the 2 guard position. “
Kidd along with two other seniors, Page Mayberry and Megan Boice, will be honored in pregame ceremonies when the Hawks face the Lakota West Firebirds on Saturday, February 6th . Tipoff is slated for 2:00 pm.

Hydration is Important All Year Long

We're always reminded of how important it is for athletes to stay hydrated during the hot summer months. But hydration is important no matter what the season. Athletic performance can lessen by 10 percent with as little as one percent loss of body fluid. That means if a 150 pound person sweats away 1.5 pounds, their athletic ability and focus will decrease. Fluid loss can also occur through breathing and urination.
